Yanyuan × Yannan Yuan Protection and Environment Improvement Project Team – Dialogue with Yannan Yuan
Event Time: May 21 (Sunday), 10:00–12:00
Event Location: Yannan Yuan → Weixiu Yuan

Since the 1950s, many Peking University professors have lived in Yannan Yuan. Nurtured and cared for by the entire university community, it has developed into a tranquil nature sanctuary for living creatures, an elegant and exquisite residential area, a cultural highland of shining stars, and a spiritual home for generations of Peking University people.
Yannan Yuan features both American-style villas and Chinese-style single-story houses, roughly half and half. The Chinese-style buildings emphasize local craftsmanship and incorporate Chinese characteristics in their details, such as finely carved lintels and window lattices imitating traditional Chinese architectural styles. The interior layouts, as well as the kitchen, bathroom, guest room, and bedroom arrangements, are no different from ordinary rural houses in the United States. "As cultural and historical conservationists, when designing we need to listen carefully and investigate, then use our creativity to solve problems. Effective historical information should be passed on, and the needs of stakeholders should be met as much as possible – after all, this is comprehensive work that requires mobilizing knowledge from multiple disciplines." This methodology of the project team for cultural relic protection is also the secret to "maximizing social benefits."

Based on point cloud data, the Peking University Yannan Yuan Protection and Environment Improvement Project Team has successfully rendered 3D models of the historic buildings in Yannan Yuan and uploaded the results to the cloud. With a simple mouse rotation, viewers can enjoy a 360-degree view of Yannan Yuan's scenery, unobstructed by bamboo fences and low walls, and can freely choose building views under different weather conditions.
In 2019, Beijing announced its first list of historic buildings, and Yannan Yuan Nos. 50–66 were successfully included. In this lush, verdant old garden, the light of civilized wisdom has always shone brightly, and as we approach it, history remains close at hand.

To support the smooth progress of the Peking University Yannan Yuan Protection and Environment Improvement Project, since March 2022, the Yannan Yuan planning working group has organized a series of public participation activities, comprehensively applying methods such as questionnaires, field visits, oral history interviews, focus groups, workshops, and thematic salons to fully and comprehensively understand the emotions, attitudes, and orientations of different groups toward Yannan Yuan. The project also received the 2022 "Global Award for World Heritage Education Innovative Cases."
Recently, the Yanyuan Heritage Protection Association, in collaboration with the project team, co-organized a salon for dialogue with Yannan Yuan. Participants could tour Yannan Yuan with a guide from Yanyuan, then walk to Weixiu Yuan to learn about Yannan Yuan's moving history. Then, led by Engineer Gao Yong, they participated in a photographic modeling experience of stone carvings to gain an understanding of historical and cultural protection work.
