
In 2024, the UNESCO World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia and the Pacific (Beijing) closely aligned its work with the World Heritage Convention and UNESCO’s Medium-Term Strategy. Through collaborative innovation and a pragmatic, efficient approach, the Center actively carried out diverse training and educational programs, advanced research on World Heritage conservation and management, and promoted exchange and cooperation in the heritage field across the Asia-Pacific region. These efforts made significant contributions to enhancing the Center’s international reputation and social impact in China, the Asia-Pacific, and globally. Below is a review of the Center’s main work over the past year.
01 — Training and Education
UN-HAP Asia-Pacific University Heritage Network Lecture Series
On June 1, 2024, Dr. Paul Burtenshaw, Senior Director of Monitoring and Evaluation at the World Monuments Fund, delivered an online lecture titled “Heritage Economics and Community Development from a Heritage Perspective.”
Dr. Burtenshaw is an expert in heritage economics, project evaluation, and the role of cultural heritage in supporting sustainable and community development. He has worked globally with community organizations, governments, academia, private foundations, international heritage organizations, and development banks on projects related to heritage conservation, evaluation, economic development, and tourism. He joined the World Monuments Fund in early 2024.
In this lecture, he used case studies from around the world to explore how to conceptualize and apply the “economic value” of heritage to support heritage managers, why generating economic impact is important, the different ways to achieve economic benefits, and how to ensure these efforts are effective and sustainable.

Peking University 2024 Summer Program for Outstanding High School Students
The School of Archaeology and Museology at Peking University, one of the earliest institutions in China to train archaeology professionals and widely regarded as the “cradle of Chinese archaeologists,” continued to host its summer program in Anxi County, Quanzhou, Fujian Province. A total of 122 high school students from 103 schools across 28 provinces participated. Through field visits, expert lectures, and hands-on activities, students experienced a vivid and unforgettable journey into archaeology.
The program was jointly organized by the School of Archaeology and Museology, WHITRAP Beijing, and the Anxi Teaching and Research Base, with support from the Anxi County Museum and the Peking University Center for Public Archaeology and Art.
Led by Shen Ruiwen, Dean of the School and Director of the Beijing Center, nearly 30 faculty members and students participated in the program. On July 15, Assistant Professor Wang Siyu delivered a lecture titled “Origins, Trends, and Challenges in Cultural Heritage Protection.”

Peking University 2024 Summer Archaeology Program
2024 Joint Workshop on Cultural Heritage Conservation
Co-organized by the School of Archaeology and Museology at Peking University, WHITRAP Beijing, and the Peking University Center for Public Archaeology and Art, this workshop combined online instruction with field research.
From July 14 to 16, experts delivered online lectures on topics including cultural economics, tourism, small and medium-sized museums, intangible cultural heritage, and rural heritage.

From July 23 to August 2, participants conducted field research in Gansu Province. Over ten days, 18 participants from 13 institutions were divided into four groups and conducted in-depth studies across multiple regions, producing illustrated research reports analyzing cultural resources, development drivers, benefit assessments, and key issues.

East Asia Heritage Management Capacity-Building Workshop
From October 21 to 23, 2024, a workshop titled “Integrated Heritage Management in East Asia — Synergy of Tangible and Intangible Heritage” was held at Peking University. Organized jointly by UNESCO offices and partner institutions, the workshop brought together 22 heritage managers from 12 World Heritage sites in China, Japan, Korea, and Mongolia.
Through lectures, discussions, and presentations, participants shared innovative practices and challenges, and explored integrated approaches to heritage management.

World Heritage Expert Lecture
On October 25, a lecture titled “Expanding China’s World Heritage Portfolio: The Role of Emerging Trends” was delivered by Dr. Gamini Wijesuriya. The lecture examined innovative strategies and future directions for expanding China’s heritage listings, emphasizing quality improvement alongside growth.

Support for Heritage Conservation Training and Education
Throughout the year, the Center’s experts contributed to numerous training programs, covering both natural and cultural heritage, from theoretical research to practical application.
On May 22, a training program for officials from Belt and Road countries was launched in Beijing, where experts from Peking University delivered lectures on natural heritage conservation and international cooperation.

02 — Research and Practice
Yannan Garden Landscape Conservation Paper Receives Qian Xuesen Urban Studies Award Nomination
On October 9, 2024, a paper co-authored by Zhang Jianwei (Associate Professor, School of Archaeology and Museology, Peking University; Researcher at the Beijing Center) and Wang Siyu (Assistant Professor, School of Archaeology and Museology, Peking University; Researcher at the Beijing Center), titled “Community Participation Approaches in Campus Cultural Heritage Conservation — A Case Study of the Yannan Garden Landscape Conservation Project at Peking University,” received a nomination for the Qian Xuesen Urban Studies (Cultural Heritage) Award.
The paper uses the Yannan Garden conservation project as a case study, outlining its historical, cultural, and ecological value. It analyzes the characteristics of community participation and explains how participation was implemented through:

·Experiential activities
·Knowledge sharing and communication
These efforts formed a multi-stakeholder conservation and utilization mechanism, advanced step-by-step through academic semesters. The study emphasizes the critical role of community participation in the protection and development of campus heritage.
National Social Science Fund Project Approval (2024)
On December 23, 2024, the National Office for Philosophy and Social Sciences officially announced the approved projects under the National Social Science Fund’s special program for cultural heritage protection and inheritance.
Following expert review and public announcement, Wang Siyu’s project titled “Research on Mechanisms and Pathways for Public Participation in Cultural Heritage Protection” was successfully selected.

Based on the World Heritage Convention, the Beijing Center actively conducted research on World Heritage sites and provided technical support for tentative lists and potential heritage sites, including OUV (Outstanding Universal Value) assessment and nomination consulting.

Academic Journal: Natural and Cultural Heritage Research
Since 2020, WHITRAP Beijing, Zhuozhong Publishing Group, and the School of Archaeology and Museology at Peking University have jointly published Natural and Cultural Heritage Research (CN10-1616/K, ISSN 2096-689X).
The journal is now a bimonthly publication, with six issues released in 2024. Its academic quality has significantly improved and received strong recognition in the heritage research community.

2nd “Gansu Dialogue” Silk Road Sustainable Tourism Forum
Held from March 25–28, 2024 in Lanzhou, this forum focused on sustainable tourism and regional development potential. It was co-hosted by UNESCO East Asia Office, the World Bank, and the Gansu Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism.
Li Guanghan delivered a keynote speech on “Cultural Heritage Protection and Tourism Development” and moderated discussions on how tourism can:

June 6, 2024, the sixth "Cultural and Natural Heritage Day" themed event of Hunan Province was held in Yanling, Zhuzhou. This event also held activities such as cultural forums and heritage site experience exchanges. Chen Yaohua, Associate Professor at the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University, and Deputy Director of the Academic Committee of the Beijing Center, delivered a keynote speech titled "World Heritage Protection and Utilization."

June 7-8, 2024, the Zhejiang Provincial Forestry Bureau held a series of activities in Jiangshan, Quzhou, titled "Protecting World Heritage, Building Beautiful China – Zhejiang Province 2024 Cultural and Natural Heritage Day Entering Jianglang Mountain," to further summarize and showcase the protection and management achievements of world natural heritage and natural protected areas in Zhejiang Province, and to promote the improvement of scenic area management levels. Chen Yaohua, Associate Professor at the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University, and Deputy Director of the Academic Committee of the Beijing Center, participated in this event, conducting field research at the Jianglang Mountain World Natural Heritage site and providing proactive suggestions for heritage protection.

"Youth and Traditional Craftsmanship" International Exchange Activity
July 15-16, 2024, the "Youth and Traditional Craftsmanship" international exchange activity, co-organized by UNESCO and the Suzhou Municipal People's Government, and undertaken by the UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia, the Suzhou Gardens and Greening Administration Bureau, and the UNESCO Asia-Pacific World Heritage Training and Research Center (Suzhou), was held at the Suzhou Conference Center. This two-day event focused primarily on the close connection between youth empowerment and the preservation of traditional craftsmanship.
Multiple international experts from 16 countries participated in panel discussions, bringing rich knowledge and global perspectives. Youth representatives from various provinces and cities in China, including Suzhou, Hangzhou, Quanzhou, Longnan in Gansu Province, and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, also exchanged and discussed, celebrating their important roles as inheritors, innovators, and transformers of cultural heritage, and emphasizing the enhancement of youth voices in decision-making processes and their central role in all actions.

46th Session of the World Heritage Committee
July 21-31, 2024, Song Feng, Associate Professor at the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University, and Deputy Director of the Beijing Center, attended the 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in New Delhi, India, as a natural heritage expert, providing technical support and services for the Badain Jaran Desert project of the Chinese delegation.

Xinzhou Cultural Heritage Forum
September 13, the Cultural Heritage Xinzhou Forum, co-hosted by the Shanxi Branch of Xinhua News Agency, Xinhuanet, the Xinzhou Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, and the Xinzhou Municipal People's Government, was held in Xinzhou City, Shanxi Province. Three parallel sub-forums were held simultaneously: Cultural Heritage Protection, Cultural Heritage Inheritance and Utilization, and Xinzhou and Mount Wutai Cultural Tourism Industry Resource Matching. Over 100 experts, scholars, and representatives from cultural tourism enterprises attended the forum to discuss the protection, utilization, inheritance, and development of cultural heritage. Li Jianghai, Professor at the School of Earth and Space Sciences, Peking University, and Deputy Director of the Beijing Center, gave a speech on the protection and management of the Mount Wutai World Heritage site. At the Cultural Heritage Inheritance and Utilization sub-forum, Professor Li Jianghai and four other guests used Mount Wutai as an example to discuss topics such as exploring heritage value and innovating interpretation methods.

World Heritage on Campus Series Exhibition Activities
September 2024, the World Heritage on Campus series exhibition commenced. The first exhibition opened on September 19 at the Huacai Exhibition Hall, Peking University Library. This event was co-organized by the Pu'er Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Pu'er Municipal People's Government, the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences at Peking University, and the UNESCO Asia-Pacific World Heritage Training and Research Center (WHITRAP) Beijing Center.

The opening ceremony was moderated by Chen Yaohua, Associate Professor at the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University, and Deputy Director of the Academic Committee of the Beijing Center. Dr. Li Guanghan, Executive Director of the Beijing Center, attended the opening ceremony. After explaining the commemorative exhibition on site, the Heritage Lecture was held in Room 109 of the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences building, where Chen Yaohua gave a lecture titled "Understanding the World Heritage Value of the Cultural Landscape of Old Tea Forests of Jingmai Mountain in Pu'er." In October, the exhibition was successively shown at Yunnan University, Southwest Forestry University, and Pu'er University.

First "ICOMOS · China · Cultural Heritage University Forum"
September 21, the first "ICOMOS · China · Cultural Heritage University Forum," jointly organized by the International Council on Monuments and Sites China (ICOMOS China), the School of Architecture at Tsinghua University, and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), was held at Tsinghua University. With the theme "Disciplinary Development of Cultural Heritage," the conference featured reports by participating experts and scholars focusing on the interaction and connection between ICOMOS and university resources, theories and methods of cultural heritage studies, the integration of cultural heritage education and practice, cultural heritage curricula, and the cultivation of young professionals.
The "ICOMOS University Forum," initiated by ICOMOS Headquarters, aims to strengthen global cooperation among ICOMOS, universities, and cultural institutions. This event was the first time the forum was held in the Asia region. Experts and scholars from 8 countries including China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Belgium, France, Brazil, and Mexico, representatives from over ten domestic universities including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Southeast University, Chongqing University, Tianjin University, Fudan University, South China University of Technology, Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, and Suzhou University of Science and Technology, representatives from the UNESCO Asia-Pacific World Heritage Training and Research Center (WHITRAP Shanghai, Beijing), as well as ICOMOS China members, teachers and students from cultural heritage-related fields, and media guests, totaling over 120 people, attended the conference.

Wang Siyu, Assistant Professor at the School of Archaeology and Museology, Peking University, and Researcher at the Beijing Center, delivered a talk titled "Heritage Studies and Talent Cultivation as an Interdisciplinary Field," pointing out that the term "heritage" has now become a broad academic concept. 2024 Annual Academic Conference of the Scenic Areas Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture
October 23 to October 26, 2024, the 2024 Annual Academic Conference of the Scenic Areas Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture was successfully held in Pu'er, Yunnan Province. The theme of this annual conference was "Scenic Areas and Rural Revitalization," and the agenda included three aspects: review of the annual work report, academic exchanges, and on-site technical exchanges. A total of over 100 participants from universities, research institutes, management agencies, and enterprises in the landscape architecture industry attended the conference. Participating experts conducted field research on the Jingmai Mountain World Heritage site and engaged in active discussions on its protection and utilization. Annual Meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology
October 26, 2024 - November 3, 2024, Jiang Dayong, Professor at the School of Earth and Space Sciences, Peking University, and Deputy Director of the Beijing Center, participated in the 84th Annual Meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, where he presented a report on the scientific significance and heritage value of the Triassic marine reptile fossil fauna in Guizhou.
Second Central Academy of Fine Arts Cultural Heritage Discipline Seminar
November 10, 2024, the Second Central Academy of Fine Arts Cultural Heritage Discipline Seminar, "Pedagogical Practice in Cultural Heritage," was held at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. This seminar began in 2023, organized by the School of Humanities and the Intangible Cultural Heritage Research Center, aiming to promote the development of cultural heritage disciplines and academic communities. A total of 23 experts and scholars covering cultural relic conservation, architectural heritage, and intangible cultural heritage participated in this conference. Dr. Li Guanghan, Executive Director of the Beijing Center, attended the conference and delivered a thematic presentation in the "International Cooperation" session titled "Interdisciplinary Teaching Experiments and Interpretation in Cultural Heritage: Taking the Cultural Heritage Joint Workshop of WHITRAP (Beijing) as an Example."

"Living Heritage Protection and Sustainable Development" International Symposium
November 22 to November 25, 2024, the "Living Heritage Protection and Sustainable Development" International Symposium, co-organized by the Yuanyang County People's Government, Fudan University, and Kunming University of Science and Technology, and undertaken by the World Heritage Hani Terraces Yuanyang Management Committee and the UNESCO Chair on Living Heritage and Community Development, was held in the Hani Terraces Heritage Area, Yuanyang County, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province.

More than 100 domestic and international experts, scholars, and local representatives from China, France, Japan, the Philippines, New Zealand, and other countries participated in this forum. The conference deeply explored the protection and sustainable development models of living heritage, shared the latest research achievements and practical experiences in related fields from home and abroad, contributing wisdom and strength to promote the creative transformation and development of living heritage.
2024 Resilient Human Settlements Academic Seminar
November 30, 2024, the 2024 Resilient Human Settlements Academic Seminar, hosted by the School of Design at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, was held at the School of Design, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The organizers invited over 20 relevant experts and scholars to jointly discuss how to strengthen the inclusivity and interference resistance of future human settlements in terms of spatial design, heritage conservation and reuse, environmental technology, etc., using cutting-edge technology and cultural research to enhance the resilience of human settlements. Dr. Li Guanghan, Executive Director of the Beijing Center, was invited to participate and delivered a thematic lecture titled "Dimensions of Cultural and Social Resilience in Human Settlements: A Case Study from a Cultural Heritage Perspective."

Grand Canal (Beijing Section) Cultural Mapping Crowdsourcing Project Results Release Event
The "Grand Canal (Beijing Section) Cultural Mapping Crowdsourcing Project" is a cultural heritage mapping co-creation activity jointly initiated by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific World Heritage Training and Research Center (Beijing) at Peking University, the Center for Public Archaeology and Art Research at Peking University, and Beijing Weiming Wenbo Cultural Technology Co., Ltd. Based on the annual monitoring work of the Grand Canal (Beijing Section), this project recruits and organizes volunteers to conduct surveys in the seven administrative districts through which the Grand Canal flows in Beijing, aggregates the survey results, and creates cultural maps.
The project was launched in August 2023. A total of 115 volunteers and 11 supervising teachers participated in cultural resource research and cultural mapping crowdsourcing. They collectively collected 402 cultural resource data points, produced and released 24 short videos about Grand Canal culture, and created 5 cultural maps of the Grand Canal area and one Grand Canal (Beijing Section) cultural scroll.
December 15, 2024, the Grand Canal (Beijing Section) Cultural Mapping Crowdsourcing Project Results Release Event was successfully held in the Lecture Hall on the first floor of the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at Peking University, with 85 guests, media representatives, and volunteers in attendance.

The various tasks undertaken by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific World Heritage Training and Research Center (WHITRAP) Beijing Center in 2024 received positive responses in relevant fields both domestically and internationally, providing confidence for the Center to continue advancing research on world heritage protection and management, promoting exchanges and cooperation in the heritage field in the Asia-Pacific region, and formulating its work plan for 2025.
