This salon aims to discuss the latest trends in heritage development within China's constantly evolving urban and rural landscape. The case studies to be discussed will cover topics such as industrial heritage, local customs and folkways, community placemaking, urban regeneration, and private museums. Framed within the urban-rural relationship and integrating diverse research perspectives including heritage studies, archaeology, and anthropology, we seek to re-understand how heritage practices mediate between village and urban living spaces, bringing together local, regional, and global knowledge and resources.

Background

The UNESCO Asia-Pacific World Heritage Training and Research Center (Beijing) is dedicated to exploring the formation of contemporary heritage disciplines.

As the heritage conservation movement expands globally, many universities around the world are also committed to building more independent heritage programs. However, precisely because of this context driven by conservation practice, today's heritage discipline is strongly practice-oriented and highly interdisciplinary, still leaving room for a more clearly defined and mature disciplinary framework.

Against this backdrop, we wish to take advantage of the current diversity, openness, and boundary-crossing potential by inviting scholars from different parent disciplines to participate in this Youth Heritage Alliance. There may be incommensurable aspects between disciplines, and views on heritage may still have room for improvement. Yet young scholars, while inheriting their own disciplinary traditions, often have the ability to innovate and break new ground. We believe this is precisely where exchange and dialogue are worthwhile, and where a more distinct heritage discipline can be nurtured. The "Youth Heritage" academic salon series is an exploration in this context.

Membership

A core academic group is formed by young scholars working in cultural heritage-related fields with diverse disciplinary backgrounds.

Current core members come from disciplines including cultural heritage, museum studies, archaeology, architecture, urban and rural planning, anthropology, sociology, tourism, etc. They are affiliated with domestic and international universities (Peking University, Tsinghua University, Sun Yat-sen University, Zhejiang University, Central Academy of Fine Arts, KU Leuven, etc.), research institutes, museums, and other relevant institutions.

Organization Method

An academic salon is organized every 1–2 months.

Each salon invites one scholar as the introducer, who sets the theme and may invite special guests to participate in the discussion. After the introducer presents the topic, a free discussion is held in salon format. A recorder is assigned to document the content of each salon for archiving.

On the basis of the core members, each salon is organized by invitation, with about 10 in-person participants. Participants from outside the Beijing area may join the discussion online.

After the salon, the discussion content will be compiled. Based on the actual content and value, it will be published in the form of meeting transcripts on the WeChat public account "Peking University Cultural Heritage Studies" or as a written symposium in relevant academic journals such as Study on Natural and Cultural Heritage.
