UNESCO World Heritage: 42 New Inscriptions

The 45th session of the World Heritage Committee, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, concluded on September 25. This year, the World Heritage Committee approved the inscription of 42 new sites on the World Heritage List and extensions for 5 existing sites.

During the 15-day meeting, the Committee added 42 new properties to the List, including 33 cultural sites and 9 natural sites. This means these sites will receive the highest level of global protection and have access to UNESCO's technical support and financial assistance. The new inscriptions bring the total number of World Heritage sites to 1,199, spread across 168 countries. In addition, the Committee approved boundary extensions for five existing sites and reviewed the conservation status of 263 sites on the List.

33rd Session of the ICCROM General Assembly

On November 2-3, 2023, representatives of ICCROM member states will gather in Rome for the 33rd session of the ICCROM General Assembly.

This year’s theme is "Cultural Heritage and Migration." The session will explore how migration changes the concept of heritage and how a more inclusive approach to heritage can promote the well-being of different communities.

ICCROM Summer School 2024 – Energy Savings for Cultural Heritage Institutions

ICCROM, in collaboration with KIK-IRPA, plans to organize an international summer school from July 1 to July 12, 2024, on the theme "Energy Savings for Cultural Heritage Institutions."

This course is part of the Climate 2 Preserve project, which aims to develop a protocol to help cultural institutions explore different energy-saving strategies considering their collections, buildings, systems, and other aspects.

UNESCO Sends Experts to Libya to Assist Recovery After Storm Daniel

A UNESCO expert delegation has arrived in Libya to support reconstruction efforts in the fields of education and heritage protection.

On September 10, Storm Daniel struck northeastern Libya, killing thousands of civilians and displacing tens of thousands. The floods severely damaged Libya's education system, heritage protection system, and water resource management.

5th World Marine Heritage Site Managers Conference

The 5th World Marine Heritage Site Managers Conference will be held from October 5 to 9, 2023, in the Wadden Sea (Denmark, Netherlands, Germany).

Every three years, managers of the 50 marine sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List gather to share practical insights on marine heritage management, discuss solutions, and chart a common path forward.

"City Heritage Conservation and Design for Sustainable Development Conference" & "First Meeting of the World Urban Heritage Conservation University Alliance" Successfully Held

From September 26 to 28, 2023, the "City Heritage Conservation and Design for Sustainable Development Conference" and the "First Meeting of the World Urban Heritage Conservation University Alliance" were successfully held in Shanghai. The conference was hosted by Tongji University and organized by the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at Tongji University, the Shanghai Center of UNESCO’s Asia-Pacific World Heritage Training and Research Institute (WHITRAP Shanghai), and the Shanghai Tongji Urban Planning and Design Institute Co., Ltd.

The two-day conference addressed three main themes:

1.Interdisciplinary Research: Theoretical development and implementation pathways of the Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape;

2.Innovative Practices: Urban heritage conservation regeneration and high-quality living;

3.Workshop on Heritage Higher Education for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

First Cultural Heritage Tourism Conference

The Chinese Society of Cultural Relics, the China Cultural Relics News, and the Organizing Committee of the China-ASEAN Expo Tourism Exhibition have jointly decided to host the First Cultural Heritage Tourism Conference in mid-October 2023, during the "2023 China-ASEAN Expo Tourism Exhibition."

The conference theme is "Travelling with National Treasures: Deepening the Integration of Cultural Heritage and Tourism."

Specific topics include:

1.Tourism interpretation of cultural heritage values;

2.Development of specialty cultural heritage tourism products;

3.Construction of cultural heritage thematic routes;

4.New cross-sector collaboration methods for "Cultural Heritage + Tourism."

"Four Cities of Ancient Eastern Zhou States Cultural Relics Thematic Route Sharing" Initiative Launched

On September 24, 2023, the "Four Cities of Ancient Eastern Zhou States Cultural Relics Thematic Route Sharing" initiative was launched in Zibo, integrating cultural relic resources into the broader "cultural tourism" development framework to promote the creative transformation and innovative development of China's outstanding traditional culture.

Houma, Shanxi (Jin State site); Zibo, Shandong (Qi capital); Jingzhou, Hubei (Chu capital, Jinan City); and Baoji, Shaanxi (Qin capital, Yongcheng) jointly signed an agreement to establish the "Eastern Zhou States Capitals" World Heritage Alliance. During the event, an academic seminar on the capitals of the Eastern Zhou states was held, featuring archaeological and academic exchanges among experts from the four provinces specializing in Jin, Qi, Chu, and Qin cultures.

"Preservation & Heritage · Technology Empowerment · Shared by the People" – The 4th Architectural Heritage Conservation and Restoration Expo to be Held in Suzhou

On October 26, 2023, the "4th Architectural Heritage Conservation and Restoration Expo" will be held in Suzhou.

Under the theme "Preservation & Heritage · Technology Empowerment · Shared by the People," the expo will be a large-scale cultural heritage protection industry event integrating industry exhibitions, academic seminars, cultural lectures, launches and promotions, artisan demonstrations, and public experiences.

Exhibition content includes: conservation and utilization of architectural heritage; protection and presentation of ancient sites and tombs; conservation and restoration of grotto temples and stone carvings; achievements in archaeological site protection and utilization; preventive conservation and technological innovation; protection and development of World Cultural Heritage; digital heritage and smart cultural tourism; ancient city conservation and urban renewal; protection of historic districts and towns; contemporary artisans and intangible cultural heritage; materials, techniques, and professional equipment; and specialized journals.

2023 Global Coastal Forum Conference Held in Yancheng, Jiangsu

The 2023 Global Coastal Forum Conference, co-hosted by the People's Government of Jiangsu Province, the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, took place from September 25 to 27, 2023, in Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province. Under the theme "Green and Low-Carbon Development, Sharing an Ecological Coastal Zone," the conference focused on coastal ecosystem conservation and restoration, coastal collaboration for migratory species conservation, sustainable development of coastal areas, and vibrant coastal zones for public participation. It featured major events, thematic forums, seminars, exhibitions, and side activities.

The conference shared advanced concepts and practical experiences for promoting green and low-carbon coastal development and harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, delivered tangible results, expanded partnerships, built international consensus, sought synergies with relevant international conventions and global initiatives, and created an international exchange and cooperation platform for coastal ecological protection and sustainable development involving multiple stakeholders.
